Look inside
Look inside
The fireflies had forgotten their lamps. The prairie went charcoal-quiet, the way a story does when someone loses the page. Lisa whispered, “We can be the ribbon of light until they remember.”
A pocketful of glow
Pip wanted to swallow a firefly to keep it safe. Lisa explained that some lights need air. They walked the fence line with jars that had holes in the lids, which is a kind of promise: we will not keep what is meant to fly.

Halfway to the creek a firefly landed on Pip’s red bandana and stayed. It was not very bright. Lisa said that was allowed. “You do not have to be the North Star,” she told it. “You only have to be yourself in the dark.” Pip decided this was the bravest sentence he had heard all week.
Classroom note
A bedtime or science-of-light companion. After the last page, dim the room and let children name one person who helped them glow this week. Works as a gentle closer before a break.
