Lisa woke before the meadowlark. The sky over the plains was so wide it felt like a promise someone had left on the porch. Pip sneezed into her sleeve, which was his way of saying the day had already started.
The first hello
“We will practice,” Lisa told him, pinning the red star in her hair. “Hello is a small word. It can still open a very big hill.” Pip practiced on a fence post. The fence post did not answer, but it did not mind.
